Toby, tell our readers a little bit more about you and the brain mapping work you’re doing to help high-achieving leaders feel well.

As the founder & CEO of NeuroFlex, a global pioneer in peak performance brain training. I am a board-certified Brain Trainer who optimizes the brains of executives, entrepreneurs, and other high achievers looking to maximize their performance in their personal and professional lives. I am passionate about applying neuroscience research to help people banish brain fog and alleviate their mental health issues. I believe that by harnessing neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change and rewire itself, anyone can build a better brain, which leads to a better life.

Walk us through the moment when you knew your current field was your calling? Where were you? What happened?

When I took a biopsychology course at the University of Oregon, I was fascinated to learn how the brain functions on a chemical and electrical level. I had come to the realization that my social anxiety and awkwardness, that had plagued my teenage years, was not the result of a moral failing or lack of willpower, but instead was a biological issue! I started working at a research lab studying how brainwave patterns produce our conscious experience of the world, and started to learn about neuroplasticity, the concept that the brain is malleable and able to rewire itself. As I began interning at a peak performance neuroscience center outside of Seattle, Washington, I started to utilize neurostimulation and neurofeedback to work on an area of my brain involved in verbal fluency, that a Brain Map showed was very underactive. As I started to realize that I could use these tools to improve my verbal fluency, greatly improving my social anxiety, allowing me to feel comfortable in social situations, I knew I was onto something. I began witnessing clients make remarkable transformations in their own lives, ranging from overcoming drug and alcohol addiction, to defeating their depression and anxiety, along with sharpening their mental clarity and cognitive performance.

What is it about your field that brings you joy?

I love empowering people to be able to improve the biological functioning of their brain, which translates into improved health, wealth, and relationships! I enjoy translating research studies in the fields of neuroscience and psychology, into practical applications that can benefit real people. I love that we are constantly learning more about how the brain works each day, even though a lot of it is still a mystery!

Who do you serve? Who is your ideal client?

I work with conscious executives, entrepreneurs, and other busy professionals in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami area. I help these type-A individuals manage their stress levels by regulating their nervous system, along with optimizing their focus and mental clarity so they can get a whole day's worth of work in before noon.

Why did you choose to serve this specific client? What are you passionate about helping this demographic?

I enjoy working with highly motivated people who are action takers. These individuals understand that Brain Training is a process, just like training the body, that requires, discipline, persistence, and consistency. These are the people who are changing the world, and the better we can get their brain to function, the closer these individuals get to fulfilling their mission.

What has been the greatest obstacle you’ve had to overcome as an entrepreneur?

Figuring out how to take calculated risks. Certain investments are risky, and may end up getting you into trouble, although playing it safe doesn't give you the chance to succeed. I've found it difficult to find a middle ground. I'm still working on it!

What has been the greatest personal challenge you’ve had to overcome in your entrepreneurial journey?

Overcoming my social anxiety so that I can speak confidently about the work I do on podcasts, conference panels, presentations, and at networking events. Several years ago, I never could've imagined I'd be able to just walk up to a stranger at an event and strike up a conversation, although I am now able to do that pretty easily most of the time.

Who are you when the workday is over and the clients are gone?

Well, as an entrepreneur the workday never really ends, does it haha? When I take time away from work, I love to be outside in the sunshine, going to the beach, or paddle boarding with my girlfriend. I've always found peace in nature. Whenever I've had a particularly stressful day, I make sure to try to end it by taking a dip in the ocean. I always feel gratitude that I'm able to do that 10 minutes from where I live in Fort Lauderdale. Never was like that growing up in Oregon!

Entrepreneurship is no easy feat. What are your go-to techniques to stay focused and keep your momentum?

Well, shameless plug, I do love using the infrared light helmet to increase cellular energy production in my brain! I try to always remember my lofty goals and the hard work it's going to take to get there whenever I get tired or frustrated. I remind myself that I have been blessed with an opportunity to create something I've been dreaming of for the past 5 years. I never lose sight of the end goal, and imagine how good it's going to feel as I keep hitting milestones as I grow my business, along with growing as a human being.

What has been the best business decision you’ve made for yourself?

To move to South Florida to get mentored by one of the top doctors in my field of Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback. Leaving home (Eugene, Oregon) and moving to Deerfield Beach, a town I'd never previously heard of, was a pivotal point in my life and the best decision I've made. I ended up meeting a great network of friends and grew a lot as a person. When I first got here, I knew that Miami was the place to do my business, and I've now turned that initial thought into a reality.

What impact do you hope to leave behind? How do you want to be remembered?

I hope to be able empower as many people as possible to improve their brain functioning so they aren't stuck suffering from mental health disorders and brain fog, robbing them of their ability to enjoy life. I would like to be remembered as someone who is always loyal, true to their word, and leaves people better off than when I find them.

Within your professional area of expertise, what is a MUST KNOW tip or piece of advice you want to give our readers?
